For my money, nothing beats a home that smells fresh and clean. But I find that chemical-based air fresheners from the supermarket don’t do much more than mask one bad odor with an even stronger one that takes hours to fade away. So I decided to experiment with natural air fresheners that I could make myself. All it took was a trip to my favorite health food store where I picked up some extracts, essential oils, and dried herbs and flowers, and I was on my way.
Use these recipes as a starting point, then let your nose be your guide to your own favorite DIY air fresheners.
Clear the Air Potpourri
Keep your home smelling terrific with this must-busting, air-clearing concoction.
2 cups of dried thuja cedar twigs and leaves
1 cup each of hyssop flowers, calamus root, and elecampane root
4 cups of water
Blend all of the dry ingredients, then scoop a cup of this herbal mixture into a pot along with the water. Let the brew simmer until the fragrance permeates the whole house. Store the rest of the mixture in an airtight container in a cool, dry place so it’s ready to clear the air whenever you need it.
One Gel of an Air Freshener
Turn old jelly glasses into clever room deodorizers with the help of this simple recipe.
2 cups of distilled water
4 packages of unflavored gelatin
10 to 20 drops of your favorite fragrant oil
Heat 1 cup of the water almost to boiling, then add the gelatin and stir until it’s dissolved. Remove from the heat and add the remaining cup of water, the fragrant oil, and the food coloring (enough to get the shade you want). Pour the mixture into clean glasses, and let them sit at room temperature until the gel is fully set. Note: Although the gel will set faster in the refrigerator, it’ll also share its scent with your food, so it’s best to have patience and let the mixture cool in the glasses at room temperature.
Sink the Stink Room Spray
Let’s face it: Some rooms are stinkier than others. So keep a bottle of this air freshener wherever you need it most.
1 cup of distilled water
1 cup of rubbing alcohol
2 drops of orange oil
Mix the ingredients in a handheld sprayer bottle, and give the room a quick spray or two whenever you need to clear the air.
