There’s no mistaking a case of acute bronchitis. You have a deep, window-rattling cough that sounds like a barking seal and brings up gobs of mucus; your muscles ache head to toe from nonstop hacking; you have a slight fever—and your voice sounds as hoarse as Marlon Brando’s.
What to do about it? Climb into a steaming tub laced with 1 cup or so of Epsom salts, plus 2 drops each of eucalyptus, thyme, and rosemary oils. The steam will increase the flow of nasal mucus and the molecules from the oils will dilate your internal airways, thereby easing your breathing. At the same time, the mega-dose of magnesium in the Epsom salts (absorbed through your skin) will relax your stressed-out bronchi. Of course, if your bronchitis lasts more than a week with no letup, see your doctor right away to rule out (or head off) pneumonia.
