Hand and Foot Care

  • If sandal weather is just around the corner, then it’s time to whip those dry, flaky dogs into shape. Treat your winter-weary feet to this timely tonic: Smash 1 ripe banana, then add 2 tablespoons of honey, 2 tablespoons of margarine, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, and mix the mash until it’s creamy. Massage the mixture onto clean, dry feet, paying special attention to any cracked or rough areas. Pull on a pair of cotton socks, and wear them overnight. Then bring on the sunshine and fresh air!

  • Working in your yard can make your hands really rough, and those store-bought hand lotions can put your budget in bad shape! Here’s a make-it-yourself concoction that’ll leave your hands soft and smooth, while leaving money in your wallet: Boil 1 tablespoon of dried rosemary, 2 tablespoons of dried chamomile flowers, and 4 cups of water in a small, uncovered pan over medium heat for about 10 minutes. Cool to room temperature, and then strain out the solids. Store the remaining liquid in a bottle in the refrigerator. Apply it to your hands with a cotton ball, and let your hands air-dry.

  • Don’t forget about your fingernails when you’re pampering your hands. To treat ‘em right, beat 1 egg yolk in a small bowl. Soak your fingernails for about five minutes, then rinse off the egg and buff your nails dry.

  • If you’re sick and tired of worrying about becoming sick (and tired), and you’ve purchased so much hand sanitizer that the clerk at the drugstore knows you by name, try whipping up a batch of the germ-killing stuff at home. You’ll keep nasty flu germs at bay, and save a buck or two, to boot! Mix ½ cup of glycerin, ½ cup of aloe vera gel, and 3 cups of isopropyl alcohol. Add 10 drops of tea tree essential oil, and 5 drops of your favorite scent of essential oil. Mix thoroughly with a fork or a whisk. Using a funnel, pour the solution into empty, rinsed out bottles, and stash ‘em in your car, your desk, and wherever else is convenient.
